CURRENT ISSUES: 1. Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA): The controversial Marine Protection Act is suddenly being put into effect with the unlimited cash from large coporate sponsored foundations, and no credible public involvement. This has provoked outcries of conflict of interest and possible political subterfuge by oil companies wanting to sever the ties locals have with the sea. Fisherman and seaweed harvesters have been labelled "extracters" of the ocean. But as of this writing, no mention has been made in the MLPA of mineral, oil, or energy extraction from these closed or adjacent areas, nor the pollution, climate change and onshore habitat destruction affecting the marine ecology. Navy "Warfare Testing" At the same time MLPA's are illegally being put into effect, so are plans to destroy huge populations of marine mammals, birds and fish through the Navy's use of sonar and advanced weapons systems in the Pacific Northwest.
